Bur oak has been called the Royal Tree of the Bluegrass. This is an apt description. The Bluegrass, a region of rolling hills in central Kentucky, is dotted with huge open-grown trees, many dating from before European settlement. These trees are bur oaks and blue ash. Every day, there are fewer and fewer of these magnificent trees as development eats up land and old age and abuse end the lives of these old monarchs.

Bur oak can make a comeback if we plant it in appropriate sites. Bur oak requires a large planting site, and it should not be planted as a street tree. In the right location, bur oak can make an outstanding addition to a home or farm landscape.

We grow bur oak at our nursery from locally collected seeds. We have an adequate inventory of bur oak to meet any planting need, from a single tree to an entire landscape restoration. Our bur oaks are carefully dug to order at the nursery, so they do not sit in a holding bed. We do not irrigate our bur oak nursery, to ensure that our planting stock is as hardy and drought-tolerant as possible.
